The game had players take down the remnants of Nobunaga Oda’s undead army, known as the Genma. ![]() It starred Samanosuke Akechi, a samurai played by Japanese actor Takeshi Kaneshiro, who provided his likeness and motion capture work. The first game, Onimusha: Warlords, was released on the PlayStation 2 in 2001. In many ways, Onimusha was a predecessor to the Devil May Cry franchise, which also began life as a Resident Evil spin-off. What set Onimusha apart was its emphasis on melee combat, unique elemental equipment, and an RPG-style progression system. ![]() Initially pitched as a Resident Evil game set in medieval Japan, Onimusha soon grew to have its own distinct elements, but mostly retained the fixed camera angles and the constant threat of undead enemies. ![]()
